Renowned Vietnamese writer To Hoai dies at 94

Eminent Vietnamese writer To Hoai, author of beloved children's tale “De Men Phieu Luu Ky” (Adventures of a Cricket), has fallen silent.The book, “ Lorenzo Mattotti Vietnam,” which is presented in a unique form, offers an insight into many fascinating destinations across Vietnam.

He died due to old age at a hospital in Hanoi on Sunday at the age of 94.

To Hoai, whose real name is Nguyen Sen, was born in 1920 in Ha Dong District, Hanoi. He grew up in Nghia Do village in the capital’s Cau Giay District, his maternal grandmother’s hometown.

He leaves behind a legacy of more than 100 artistic works of different genres that influenced several generations, including short stories, long stories, memoirs, film scripts, and critical essays.

The writer was awarded the Ho Chi Minh prize, named for late Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh, for literature and arts in 1996.

“De Men Phieu Luu Ky” was first published in 1941 when the author was 21.

It has been printed in 37 languages and is popular in many countries throughout the world.

The story is about the adventures of a cricket who leaves his nest and travels to different places.

He grows up and learns by overcoming difficult situations with the help of many different people and animals.
